First Social Science Scholars selected at Elon College

ELON COLLEGE – Twelve sophomores recently were selected as Elon College’s first Social Science Scholars.

The students will take a yearlong seminar together called “Scholarship at Work: Research in Social Science,” which will give them an opportunity to discuss research approaches and issues with social science faculty members. David Crowe, a professor of history and a noted scholar of Eastern Europe and the Holocaust will coordinate the course in the first year.

In addition to the seminar, the scholars will work closely with a faculty mentor in developing a research project that they will present at a public forum or professional meeting. The final version of the paper will be published in a collected volume of student research. The scholars can apply for a grant up to $750 to support their research or travel to professional meetings.

The scholars were chosen following a process that included faculty nomination and reviews by the social science division’s departments and a special social science committee. The students also were required to have a 3.2 cumulative grade point average.

“The Social Science Scholars Program is a wonderful addition to the research and experiential learning opportunities available to students in social science majors,” said Joan Gundersen, dean of the social science division at Elon.
