Elon students gain recognition for donation to cystic fibrosis research

ELON COLLEGE – The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation recently recognized the efforts of sororities and fraternities at Elon College in raising more than $5,500 to support cystic fibrosis research.

The groups held a fund drive earlier this year in memory of Elon Phi Mu sorority member Liz Fleuren, who died in January due to complications of the disease.

Members of the 17 sororities and fraternities noted Fleuren’s friendship and dedication in donating the money to the Raleigh chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Fleuren was a senior majoring in human services from Riverside, Conn.

“Your dear friend, Liz Fleuren, would be very proud. Congratulations on a great campaign,” said Liz Tinling of the Raleigh CF chapter. She noted that everyday about three babies are born with CF in the United States.
Fund-raising activities included contests among the fraternities and sororities, as well as donations from individual members, chapters, parents, friends and Elon College faculty members.

The Greek Life program at Elon College is viewed as one of the strongest in North Carolina and the southeast. The Interfraternity Council and the Panhellenic Council regularly win awards at the Southeastern Interfraternity Conference and Southeastern Panhellenic Conference. Thirty-two percent of Elon College students are involved in fraternities and sororities.
