ELON COLLEGE – A student at Elon College who wants to live on campus is finding more options than ever thanks to the addition of a new complex with 312 beds.
“We offer everything from the traditional suite with a shared common bathroom, a suite with outside entrance and shared common bathroom to apartment-style living,” said John Barnhill, assistant dean of students.
Barnhill said students expect options. And Elon like many other colleges and universities is trying to meet students’ needs.
The college’s new housing, Danieley Flats, allows as many as 10 students and as few as four to live in apartment-style housing in five buildings. The complex also includes a commons building that has a dining area, lounge and a computer lab. “We are really pleased with this complex. It is another wonderful living option for our students,” Barnhill said.
This year the college is requiring sophomores to live on campus as well as freshmen. The requirement coupled with a higher retention rate, means more than half of Elon’s 4,000 students are living in campus housing. To accommodate the increase, the college is leasing several apartment complexes in the town of Elon College.
“This is a good model,” Barnhill said. “It keeps our students connected to the campus.”
