The complex issues and possibilities posed by human cloning will be discussed when Frank Portugal visits Elon’s McCrary Theatre at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 14 for a speech titled, “In Whose Image? The Cloning of Human Life.” The speech is part of the Voices of Discovery speaker series, sponsored by the departments of Science and Mathematics.
Portugal’s research has contributed to unraveling the genetic code and understanding the nature of retroviruses. He has served as a science policy consultant to numerous agencies and organizations and as a science and education consultant to the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
Portugal is president of a biotechnology company, Opto-Gene, Inc. His involvement in the biotech industry has connected science and business interests, resulting in several patents, held or pending, related to his work.
Portugal has been associated with the National Institutes of Health, the Carnegie Institute of Washington and the National Academy of Sciences. He is the author of several books, including “A Century of DNA.”
