R.N. Ellington Center to house health and counseling services

Trustees at Elon College have approved construction and the naming of a new center to house health and counseling services on campus. Work will begin this winter on the $850,000 R. N. Ellington Center, which will be named in honor of Dr. Robert N. Ellington of Burlington, N.C. This will be the first new building begun under the NewCentury@Elon strategic plan, approved by Elon trustees Oct. 11.

Dr. Ellington has served as Elon’s college physician for 15 years. The center’s naming recognizes his years of service as well as a main gift Dr. Ellington and his wife Helen have made to the fund-raising campaign for the new building.

“Dr. Ellington has been one of Elon’s greatest friends and supporters,” says Leo M. Lambert, Elon president. “He genuinely cares about the health of each student and has been tireless in his efforts to provide them with the best medical attention. In addition, Bob can regularly be found at athletics events, concerts, convocations and a wide variety of student activities. He is a loyal member of our community and richly deserves this honor.”

Elon students, as well as faculty and staff, currently have access to a wide range of medical and counseling services in two separate facilities. The new 5,000-square-foot R.N. Ellington Center, to be located on the north side of campus near the Story Center, Loy Center and Moseley Center, will bring the two services together under one roof. The center will provide expanded modern facilities, including five medical examination rooms, a sick/observation room, rooms for triage, medications, laboratory equipment and shot administration, five counseling rooms, a group conference room, a waiting room and staff office space. Construction will begin this winter and completion of the project is scheduled for fall 2001.

The campaign for the center has already received major support from the Elon Parents Council, which raised more than $220,000 from its members. Other gifts have been made by Elon trustee and alumnus Shelly Hazel and the Alamance Regional Medical Center. Fund raising for the project continues.
