Isabel W. Rogers: “The Power of One”

Dr. Rogers will present this year’s lecture honoring her late Professor H. Shelton Smith, class of ’17, founder of the North Carolina Council of Churches and graduate studies in religion at Duke University. She is a recently retired professor of Christian ethics at The Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, Va.

Benjamin Jacobs, The Dentist of Auschwitz: A Memoir

In 1941, Jacobs, a Jewish dental student in Poland, was deported by the Nazis and spent the next four years in concentration camps, where he worked on the teeth of the living, as well as extracting gold teeth from his dead friends. In his best-selling book, “The Dentist of Auschwitz,” he relates experiences about life in the camps.

Benjamin Carson, “The Big Picture: The Life of a Professional Surgeon”

Dr. Carson, director of pediatric neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institution, was the primary neurosurgeon among the 70-member team that successfully separated 7-month-old craniopagus twin boys in 1987. His autobiography, “Gifted Hands,” chronicles his road from a broken home and poverty to his life today.
