Elon College to host first Service Learning Institute

ELON COLLEGE – The first Service Learning Institute for area colleges and universities involved in or considering offering service learning programs will be held Tuesday, March 2 at Elon College.

The one-day institute is being conducted by the North Carolina Campus Volunteers Coalition, a group of institutions that represent faculty, staff and students who are active in learning and teaching through service. The five-year-old coalition is based in Elon’s Kernodle Center for Service Learning.

More than 60 representatives from institutions statewide, including Duke, N.C. State, Wake Forest and Western Carolina universities, as well the universities of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Greensboro, will attend the day-long conference. Mary Morrison, director of the APPLES Service Learning Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is the keynote speaker.

“By sponsoring the institute, the coalition hopes to reach out to small and large schools to share ideas and models on service learning,” said John Barnhill, chair of the coalition’s board and assistant to the dean of students at Elon College. Many colleges and universities are implementing innovative service learning programs to enhance students’ knowledge, civic responsibility and lifelong skills.
