The story of a farming family’s struggle to maintain their way of life is told through mime and Latin American music in “A Peasant of El Salvador,” at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 26 in McCrary Theatre, located in the Faith Rockefeller Model Center for the Arts on the Elon campus. Sponsored by the chaplain’s office and the Latin American Studies Program, the play is free and open to the public.
Created and performed by Peter Gould and Stephen Stearns, the play chronicles an El Salvadoran farming family’s effort to survive during the nation’s turbulent events of the 1970s and 1980s. The two actors create 16 different characters in the play, including a land reform officer, a plantation foreman and the old peasant farmer, the play’s central character.
“A Peasant of El Salvador” has won numerous awards since its first performance in 1981, including the Denver Global Justice and Peace Award in 1985.
