An Elon University practice football field will be dedicated to a former coach and Elon Sports Hall of Fame member at 6 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 7.
The northernmost of three football practice fields in the North athletics complex is being named for George Tucker, Elon’s head football coach from 1960-64. A gift from friends and former players, Tucker Field is a tribute to Tucker’s coaching career and the influence he had on his players.
Athletics Director Alan White, President Leo M. Lambert and Elon alumnus Dan Kelley will preside with Tucker at the dedication Saturday.
During his time as coach, Tucker compiled a record of 29 wins, 20 losses and one tie. In 1964, his team went 8-1-1 and produced Elon’s first outright conference championship in more than 20 years.
Tucker was inducted into the Elon Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. He lives in Columbia, S.C., with his wife, Becky.
