Eight Elon freshmen have been chosen as this year’s recipients of a Watson Scholarship, awarded annually to North Carolina students at the university with a record of strong academic achievement and high financial need.

- Charity Bumpass, Roxboro, Person High School
- Adam Coble, Whitsett, Eastern Guilford High School
- Jarred Cook, Camden, Camden County High School
- Raphael Garcia, Fayetteville, Seventy-First High School
- Alena Johnson, Asheville, A.C. Reynolds High School
- Misty Pearson, Lexington, North Davidson High School
- Jie Wen Xiao, Burlington, Southern Alamance High School
Watson Scholarship recipients receive a total financial aid package, which may include state and federal funds, up to the full cost of tuition, fees, room and board. Students also receive up to $3,000 to fund a study abroad experience.
The Leon and Lorraine Watson Scholarship Program was endowed in 1999 by the estate of Leon “Doc” Watson, a 1925 graduate, and his wife, Lorraine. Their $3 million bequest is the largest gift designated for scholarships in the school’s history.
