An Elon senior was honored by North Carolina Governor Mike Easley recently for her outstanding record of volunteer service.
Annie Chalmers was honored Tuesday, Feb. 11 by Easley and the NC Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service with the 2002 North Carolina Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service. Chalmers was one of 112 volunteers honored at a ceremony held in Raleigh at Trinity Baptist Church.
The North Carolina Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service honors volunteerism in North Carolina by recognizing individuals, groups and businesses that make a significant contribution to their community through volunteer service. Chalmers was nominated by CrossRoads Sexual Assault Center for her work on and off campus to raise awareness about, and reduce the stigma of, sexual violence. She serves as a 24-hour crisis line responder, often accompanying victims to the hospital or police station.
She also serves as a community educator, speaking to the public, in schools, at health fairs and at special events. On campus, she has served as the campus director for the annual Take Back the Night march and serves as the Sexual Assault Prevention Student Coordinator in the Office of Student Life.
Attending the awards ceremony with Chalmers was Elon alumna Amy Butcher ’99 and Jana Lynn Patterson, associate dean of students.
