Elon student receives scholarship from Golden LEAF Foundation

Brian Gold, a rising sophomore at Elon University, has received a $2,500 scholarship from The Golden LEAF Foundation. Based in Rocky Mount, N.C., the foundation awards a scholarship to one student at 36 North Carolina private colleges and universities. Gold, of Asheville, N.C., is a biology major.

The Golden LEAF Foundation makes grants to non-profit and government agencies to invest in North Carolina communities affected by the decline of tobacco and its role in the state’s economy. Founded in 1999, the foundation receives 50 percent of the funds coming to North Carolina through the national tobacco master settlement agreement. Scholarship recipients must demonstrate financial need and must live in one of the state’s 63 tobacco-dependent counties.

“We are grateful to The Golden LEAF Foundation for their generous support,” says Nan Perkins, vice president for institutional advancement. “Scholarships such as these ensure that the promise of an Elon education will be available to deserving North Carolina students.”
