Elon named “College of Distinction” in new guide

Elon University is named one of the nation’s “Colleges of Distinction” in a new college guidebook and Web site produced by Student Horizons Inc., a Washington, D.C.-based company founded by parents, educators and admissions professionals.

About 175 top colleges and universities, including 43 schools in the South, were chosen for the recognition based on a survey of high school guidance counselors from across the country.

The Student Horizons team identified schools “that consistently excel in providing undergraduate education, and that have a truly national reputation.” These schools were selected based on four areas of distinction:

  • Engaged students – schools that demonstrate commitment to keeping students interested and involved in their education, including innovative hands-on learning techniques, fieldwork, internships, study abroad and research
  • Great teaching – schools that encourage faculty to be great teachers, keep classes small and encourage new and innovative curricula
  • Vibrant communities – schools that offer myriad opportunities for co-curricular involvement and leadership development
  • Successful outcomes – schools that have excellent employment placement records and alumni who remain involved in the school long after graduation

The “College of Distinction” guide attempts to take a unique approach to judging quality in higher education. According the group’s Web site, “Instead of looking for the richest or most famous schools, we ask about what really matters: Which colleges are the best places to learn, to grow, and to succeed?”

Student Horizons says the schools chosen have an excellent reputation among high school guidance counselors and education professionals, as well as graduate schools and employers. A “Colleges of Distinction” guidebook will be published in 2004 and the full list of schools and other details about the Student Horizons work can be found at www.collegesofdistinction.com.
