“Tom Jones” on stage at McCrary Theatre, April 22-25

The performing arts department will present David Rogers’ “Tom Jones” at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 22-Saturday, April 24 and at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 25 in McCrary Theatre, located in the Center for the Arts on the Elon University campus.

Based on the 18th century novel by Henry Fielding, the play is a bawdy romp through the life of the very attractive but parentless Tom Jones. When he falls in love with Sophia, the daughter of a wealthy landowner, he is banished from the county and flees to London. Sophia runs away to join him, with her boorish father and haughty aunt in hot pursuit. A series of odd characters, mistaken identities, and romantic misadventures lead to much hilarity along the way as the young lovers try to find one another.

The production, directed by Fredrick J. Rubeck, will feature beautiful 18th century costumes designed by Jack Smith, scenery designed by Dale Becherer, and lighting designed by William Webb. Stephen Hyers is the fight director.

Rob Marnell plays Tom Jones, Angie Blocher plays Sophia Western, Nick Burr plays Mr. Western, Corey Roberts plays Miss Western, and John Kernodle plays Partridge, the narrator.

Tickets are available for $12 or free for those with valid Elon identification. Tickets may be purchased by calling the McCrary Theatre box office at (336) 278-5610. The box office is open from 12:30-5 p.m., Monday-Friday.
