National teacher of the year to speak at Elon March 7

The Elon University Teaching Fellows program will host 2004 Disney national teacher of the year Danny Magrans for a speech at 7:30 p.m., Monday, March 7 in McCrary Theatre, located in the Center for the Arts. The speech is free and open to the public.

Magrans is a Spanish teacher at Clarksville (Tenn.) High School. He is the creator and sponsor of the school’s HOPE Club, which helps members of the community with physical, mental and spiritual challenges. Magrans and his Spanish students communicate with students at an orphanage in Mexico through a study abroad technology program. encouraging them in their studies.

The Disney American Teacher Awards were created to honor teachers nationwide. A national committee of educators nominates honorees in 10 teaching categories. Students, parents, educators and community members nationwide annually nominate more than 70,000 teachers for the award.
