Homecoming Weekend set for September 16-18

Class reunions, an open house at the new Alumni Center, Phoenix football in Rhodes Stadium and the new Phoenix Phest following the game are some of the highlights of Elon’s Homecoming Weekend, Sept. 16-18.

Homecoming activities are set to begin Friday, Sept. 16. Highlights of the day include an open house at Johnston Hall on South Campus, which includes the new Alumni Center, an alumni golf tournament and an evening reunion party for the classes of 1965, 1975 and 1985.

Alumni will hear an update from President Leo M. Lambert and congratulate winners of this year’s alumni awards during a 10 a.m. session in Whitley Auditorium on Saturday, Sept. 17. The Phoenix football team will host Presbyterian College in a 2 p.m. game at Rhodes Stadium, where the halftime show will feature marching band alumni performing with “The Fire of the Carolinas,” Elon’s marching band.

Immediately following the football game, the first-ever Phoenix Phest party will be held on the Woods Center plaza at Rhodes Stadium. Food and drinks will be available, as well as crafts and games for children. Live music will be provided by the local band Dakkota, formed in 1994 by five Elon alumni. Dakkota has shared the stage with country music stars Merle Haggard, George Jones, Alan Jackson, Brooks & Dunn and Tim McGraw.

On Sunday, Sept. 18, a gospel choir reception and worship service will start the day at 9 a.m. in the Center for the Arts. Deceased alumni will be honored during an alumni worship service at 10:30 a.m. at Elon Community Church. Homecoming activities conclude with a women’s soccer game against UNC-Wilmington at 1 p.m. at Rudd Field.
