June Murphy Looney ’42, who served as dean of women, associate dean of students and professor of psychology from 1968 until her retirement in 1976, died Sunday, Dec. 24. She was named professor emeritus following her retirement.
Before her work at Elon, Looney served in the N.C. public schools for many years. After teaching school in Norfolk, Va., during World War II, Looney was a guidance counselor at R.M. Wilson Junior High School in Rocky Mount, N.C. She subsequently served as director of guidance services for the Rocky Mount school system, and later in Nash County, N.C.
Looney earned a master’s degree in guidance and counseling from East Carolina University, and received a fellowship to further her work on psychological testing at N.C. State University.
