Statewide television broadcast focuses on Triad economy

The television studios of Elon's School of Communications hosted a live statewide broadcast by UNC-TV on July 11. President Leo M. Lambert and other leaders from the Triad discussed prospects for the region's economic future. Details...

President Lambert was joined by Elon trustee Louis DeJoy, CEO of New Breed, Inc.; North Carolina A&T State University Chancellor Stanley Battle; N.C. State Senator Kay Hagen; and BB&T Chief Operating Officer Kelly King as panelists for the discussion. The group discussed a variety of issues that will have an impact on central North Carolina’s economy in coming decades.
    The importance of higher education, as well as improving K-12 education were seen as critical priorities in preparing a well-trained workforce for new industries. Lambert said the region’s universities must take a leadership position in pushing for improvements in public school education.

    Lambert said changes are also in store for higher education as universities adapt to the changing economy and respond to the needs of businesses that are looking for new skill sets in their employees.

    Panelists agreed that cooperation among local governments and businesses will be critical to the Triad’s growth and success. The new Elon University School of Law, which opened in downtown Greensboro in 2006, was cited as a good example of the fruits of cooperation.

    UNC-TV moderator Shannon Vickery asked the panelists to look 30-40 years into the future to describe the Triad’s evolution and the steps it would take to ensure positive growth and development. Several panelists agreed that it will be important to preserve the high quality of life, including managing growth to preserve the environment.

    The Triad CEO Forum 2007 was produced with funding from the Joseph M. Bryan Foundation of Greater Greensboro. This was the third program in this UNC-TV series. UNC-TV’s 11 stations comprise North Carolina’s only statewide television network.
