The fourth annual Innovation in Instruction Conference, “Teaching and Transformation” was held Aug. 16. About 200 educators from the Triad area participated. Details…
The conference began with a session led by two Elon
professors. Charity Johansson, professor of physical therapy education,
explained the steps leading to transformation in learning. The presentation of
her model was designed to give faculty a language and conceptual framework for
discussion throughout the day, she said.
Tom Arcaro, professor of sociology, described his work with
the Periclean Scholars program at Elon in his presentation, “Transforming
Student Lives by Creating Global Citizens.” Arcaro explained that the inaugural
class of Periclean Scholars focused their three-year project on the issue of
HIV/AIDS in Namibia. Two members of that class, Laura Iannacone and Jonathan
Aleshire, spoke of their experiences in the program and how they’ve maintained
the transformative process since graduation.
“The transformation isn’t just an undergraduate thing, it’s
a lifelong thing,” said Arcaro.
