Homecoming Weekend packed with alumni events

From tailgating before the big game to sipping coffee with the school president, Homecoming 2007 offers something for everyone at Elon University. Festivities kick off Friday morning with registration at the Moseley Center. Here is a sample of what you’ll find as you reconnect with old classmates while making new friends.

NOON: Golden Alumni Luncheon and Class of 1957 Induction
McKinnon Hall, Moseley Center
Members of the Class of 1957 and all graduates who have celebrated their 50th Reunion are invited to this special luncheon. The Class of ’57 is the class of honor as members are inducted into the Golden Alumni group.

3-5 P.M.: School of Communications Alumni Wisdom Sessions
School of Communications lobby, McEwen Building
School of Communications alumni offer their wisdom to current students about finding their first job, networking within the profession and how their Elon experiences are enhancing their professional lives.

4-5:30 P.M.: Homecoming College Coffee and Pep Rally – CANCELED DUE TO RAIN
Fonville Fountain
Make plans to be on campus for this special Homecoming edition of the College Coffee tradition. Visit with current and former faculty and staff members while enjoying a familiar campus setting. If you would like to ensure a specific faculty and/or staff member is present, please send their names to shutton2@elon.edu.

And don’t miss the finale to the event! Head football coach Pete Lembo and his players will join the gathering at 5 p.m. for a spirit-raising pep rally as they prepare to take on the UT-Chattanooga Mocs.

7 P.M.: Elon Alumni Awards Dinner
McKinnon Hall, Moseley Center
The National Alumni Executive Board invites alumni, guests and friends to a special dinner as the university recognizes the 2007 Elon Alumni Award winners. the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year, Young Alumnus of the Year, Young Alumna of the Year, Service to Church and Society Award and Outstanding Service to Elon Award will be presented. Check the Homecoming web site for details. Registration is required.

7 P.M.: Comedian Mike Bibriglia: Secret Public Journal Tour
Alumni Gym, Koury Center
Join Elon undergraduates and alumni for an evening of comedy with Mike Bibriglia, one of the youngest comedians ever to appear on “The Late Show” with David Letterman. He also has starred in two Comedy Central Presents specials. His “Secret Public Journal,” a weekly blog that evokes the nostalgic tone of David Sedaris and the familiarity of Bill Cosby, has galvanized his fan base. No admission fee, but a ticket is required.

Department of Performing Arts Fall Musical – “Cabaret”
McCrary Theatre, Center for the Arts
The fall musical will be “Cabaret,” directed by Catherine McNeela, choreographed by Lynne Kurdziel, with music direction by Kenneth Lee. Admission is $12 per ticket.

9 P.M. – MIDNIGHT: Evening Under the Lights: Young Alumni Party
Woods Center Plaza, Rhodes Stadium
Young alumni (classes of 1997-2007) will mix with the Class of 2008 for a rockin’ luau on the Concourse at Rhodes Stadium. Cash bar, heavy hors d’oeuvres, DJ, party favors and more. Come hang out with your old friends, meet some new ones and enjoy a night of Elon celebration before the big game. IDs required.

The match-up of Southern Conference foes includes a halftime show by members of the expanded Fire of the Carolinas marching band with alumni band members. The 2007 Homecoming King and Queen will also be crowned during halftime. Tickets are $15.

We’re taking you back to the days of Earth Wind and Fire, Frankie Beverly & Maze, Parliament, ZAPP, Soul to Soul, Afrika Bambaataa & the Soulsonic Force, Curtis Blow, RUN DMC, Rob Base and more.

7 P.M.: Elon basketball – Maroon/Gold Scrimmage
Alumni Gym, Koury Center
Get a preview of the 2007-2008 men’s basketball team. Head coach Ernie Nestor and his players invite alumni to an intra-team scrimmage as they prepare for another season of Phoenix basketball.
