The Redwoods Group and its president and CEO, Kevin Trapani, of Chapel Hill, N.C., have joined the work of Elon’s Periclean Scholars and the Class of 2008 project to renovate a school in Chiapas, Mexico.
Project Pericles director Tom Arcaro says that Trapani and three of his staff members will travel with eight Periclean Scholars to Chiapas in early January to work on the renovation project.
In addition, the company has committed $3,650 to help defray the students’ travel costs, and an additional $5,000 if the Class of 2008 reaches its fundraising goal of $10,000 by December 1.
“We are thrilled that Mr. Trapani and his colleagues have decided to donate their time and talents, along with their funds to this project,” Arcaro says. “They are willing to roll up their sleeves and get involved in a remarkable way.”
Faculty member Michael Frontani, who is mentoring the Periclean Scholars Class of 2008, says the Redwoods gift demonstrates the value of perseverance in a cause. “The hard work of the Class of 2008 Pericleans put them in a position to receive this extraordinarily generous gift, and it has allowed the class to forge a relationship with an organization that demonstrates the highest values and investment in global responsibility,” Frontani says.
“As a class, we are honored to be able to share our experience and passion with those in the Redwoods Group,” says class member Laura Sinden. “The belief that the Redwoods Group has shown in our cause by this donation of time and money is invaluable to our project, and will be a great asset to the work we are doing in January.”
Trapani is the father of 2007 Elon University alumnus Caitlin Trapani, who was active in Project Pericles work. Trapani and the company previously gave $125,000 to endow The Redwoods Group Endowment Fund for the Sustainment of the Periclean Scholars Program, which supports activities of the Periclean
Scholars Alumni Association. Income from the fund will enable Periclean Scholars who graduate from Elon to continue their service work as alumni.
