We look forward to hearing his plans for the future of our state in his campaign for governor.”
Orr was appointed to the N.C. Court of Appeals in 1986 and served until his election to the N.C. Supreme Court in 1994. He was reelected in 2002 and retired in 2004 to lead the newly formed N.C. Institute for Constitutional Law.
Orr was active in Republican politics in western North Carolina before his appointment to the Court of Appeals. After earning undergraduate and law degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Orr served three years in the U.S. Army and eventually established a law practice in Asheville. He served as chairman of the Buncombe County GOP and coordinated the 11th Congressional District gubernatorial campaign for eventual winner Jim Martin.
Active on a variety of professional boards and commissions, Orr has chaired the National Park System Advisory Board and the Southeastern Conference on Genetics in the Courtroom. He has also served as vice president of the N.C. Bar Association and served on the N.C. Chief Justice’s Innocence Commission.
Orr has taught appellate advocacy and state constitutional law at several law schools and serves on the Board of Visitors at N.C. Central University School of Law.
