RecycleMania 2008 results for Week 5

Elon University has collected 19 percent more recycled material in the RecycleMania 2008 contest than at the same midpoint of the competition a year ago.

Excellent Progress

Elon continues to expand on the overall recycled volume collected.  Thanks to continued campus wide efforts, through Week 5, the mid-point to the RecycleMania campaign, Elon compiled 11,580 pounds of recyclables, topping prior year’s week five by 1,940 pounds.

The 49,860 lbs of materials collected to date puts Elon University 19 percent ahead of the collected volume from 2007.  The school goal this year is to exceed 94,318 pounds.

Art Contest

Congratulations to all participants in this year’s Recycled Art Contest.  Four teams competed on Monday, March 3, in the 2nd annual Recycled Art Competition, sponsored by Residence Life. The teams created different art forms made from recycled materials including cardboard, glass, plastic bottles, wire coat hangers, newspaper, tin cans, and more.

The winning entry was a large face made mainly of tin soup cans called “Mmm Mmm Good.” Brett Patterson and Emily Miller composed this piece which also utilized newspaper and old boxes to help provide support for the face. They are the winners of a check for $200.

Second place went to James Burns, who utilized materials including an old glass bottle, glass beads, wire coat hangers, and plastic bottles and bottle caps to create a simplistic flower display. James will receive a check for $150. Nick Dioguardi won third place after he created a guitar made of used cardboard and wire coat hangers for the strings. He will receive a check for $100.

Brittany Ison and Karen Grunwald received an honorable mention for their piece made of plastic water bottles that resembled the Eiffel Tower.

RSA Contest

So far, more than 11,000 pounds of plastic/aluminum/glass and paper recyclables have collected from all combined resident hall areas.  More than 8,000 pounds of just aluminum/plastic and glass have been collected thus far, setting a pace to top last year’s total for the contest of 10,199 pounds.

All areas are showing off their competitive spirit, but on a per capita basis, the West Area has taken a hold of the lead through week five, followed closely by East area and the North area.

Strategies planned well in these areas could determine the overall campus champion.
