Robert Anderson, an associate professor of political science, was the guest speaker in the Twin Lakes GREAT DECISIONS Foreign Policy Lecture Series on Friday, April 4 attended by approximately 100 participants.
Anderson addressed the topic of “Engaging the Enemy: The Diplomatic Pros and Cons of Blacklisting Those With Whom We Disagree.” The topic included a discussion of the impact of terrorism on American diplomacy in the Bush Administration — especially as it has offered new challenges of engagement with both allies and enemies. The difficulties and benefits of dealing with countries like Cuba, North Korea, Iran, Syria and Sudan were assessed — as well as the pros and cons of conducting open discussions with “labeled terrorist groups” such as Hamas and Hezbollah.
