An Elon University alumnus was honored by his company last month for his volunteer work with both the corporation and his community.
Jay Tutwiler ‘76 received a “Volunteer of the Year” award from Dominion, one of the nation’s largest producers and transporters of energy. Tutwiler works for the company in Kitty Hawk, N.C., as a coordinator for delivery design.
He was one of 16 recipients of a volunteer award. Among the list of projects for which Tutwiler, a history major at Elon, was commended:
• He coaches teenage girls basketball teams in Dare County (N.C.) Parks and Recreation.
• Tutwiler chaperones for the First Flight High School Band, in which his daughter plays the trumpet.
• As part of Dominion’s annual employee environmental workday last fall, Tutwiler spearheaded efforts by colleagues to build picnic tables and bicycle racks with company-donated lumber at the Nags Head Nature Conservancy.
• According to a company news release, Tutwiler commits “a large percentage” of his volunteer time to St. Andrew’s by the Sea Episcopal Church in Nags Head.
The Dominion award comes with a $1,000 contribution to Tutwiler’s charity of choice – in this instance, the First Flight High School Jazz Band.
“On behalf of Dominion, I salute the passion, commitment and energy of these employees who have shared their time and talents so generously with others,” Thomas F. Farrell II, chairman, president and CEO of the company, said in a news release. “They realize that the best way to acknowledge the gifts they have received is to share them with others, in their hometowns, and in some cases, around the world.”
