The no. 2 seed UNC Wilmington Seahawks posted 11 runs in the top of the ninth inning to down the no. 3 seed Elon Phoenix 15-11 on June 1. The loss ends Elon's competition in this year's NCAA post-season play.
With the loss, Elon(44-18) is eliminated from the NCAA Regional while UNC Wilmington(44-16-1) will advance to face no. 1 seed North Carolina in theregional championship game. Elon used a six-run sixth inning and afour-run eight inning to lead the Seahawks 11-4 entering the ninthinnning.
Donny Jobe and Mike Melillo led Elonfrom the plate with three hits each while Chris Dove, Bennett Davis,Chase Austin and Harry Austin each posted two hits.
ThomasGirdwood (5-2) suffered the loss for Elon, giving up five runs on threehits. Starter Jesse Lewter tossed 5.2 innings and gave up four run onfour hits and struck out three. Jared Kernodle threw 2.2 innings inrelief and gave up five runs on five hits while striking out one.
