Belk Library’s book collection and a group of freshmen recently benefited from a contest held by the library staff during Orientation Weekend.

On Aug. 25, Randall Bowman, reference and instruction librarian, and Teresa LePors, coordinator of library public services, announced a freshman reading title contest during a dessert reception held for the freshman class. Pictured are the contest winners, left to right: Heather Geiger, Talitha Tweedy, and Bridgette Guedri.

About 80 students entered the contest by filling out a form that asked, “What is a book that you think all freshmen should read and who is it written by?” and submitted their selection for a chance at three Barnes and Noble gift cards from the campus store.

Harpers Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird,” and Dr. Seuss’s “Oh, the Places You’ll Go,” were two of the popular choices among the 63 recommended titles. Other top titles included “The Hiding Place” by Corrie Ten Boom, George Orwell’s “1984,” and “A Clockwork Orange” by Anthony Burgess.

Winners were selected by a random drawing. Heather Geiger chose “A Boy Called H,” by Kappa Senoh, and she received a $30 gift card. A $20 gift card went to Talitha Tweedy, who chose, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” by Maya Angelou. Bridgette Guedri was presented with a $10 gift certificate for her pick, “A Clockwork Orange.”

The library plans to purchase the suggested books that were not already on its shelves.
