Residence Life staff present at conferences

Five staff members in the Office of Residence Life have made presentations or been recognized by peers in recent weeks for contributions to their profession.

Niki Turley, director of Residence Life, made three presentations in October at the North Carolina Housing Officers conference in Winston-Salem, N.C. They included the following:

– “They didn’t teach that in grad school: Finding your first job and making it work.”

– “Chief Housing Officers Roundtable: Recruitment of Professional Staff”

– “The benefits of a mentoring relationship”


Becca McQueen, assistant director of Residence Life – Danieley Center, presented “aWAKEn Your Professional Development at RELI” at the North Carolina Housing Officers conference. She was elected to a two-year term as North Carolina’s South Eastern Association of Housing Officers representative and will represent North Carolina college and university housing officers on the regional level.

Danny Glassmann, assistant director of Residence Life and Multicultural Center, was awarded the 2008 North Carolina Housing Officers Outstanding New Professional Award at the annual conference.

Nadia Alamo, associate director of Residence Life – operations and information management, was awarded $200 from Elon’s Office of Civic Engagement for “Driving Senior Citizens to the Polls.”

Barker, assistant director of Residence Life and Multicultural Center, presented on Oct. 25 at the RA Drive In Conference at Fayetteville State University, an annual conference is held around the state to offer guidance and resources for resident assistants and professional staff members working in residence life. The presentation, “Finding and Securing Your First Professional Position,” and was co-facilitated by Robert Barker from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
