Senior Randy Gyllenhaal, a broadcast communications major, finished third in the Hearst Foundation Journalism Awards Program news broadcast competition.
By placing in the top 5, Gyllenhaal, a reporter for Phoenix14News, won a $1,000 scholarship and qualified for the national semifinals, which means he will now submit additional entries for the next round of judging. If he finishes in the top five again, he will go to the National Broadcast News Championships in San Francisco.
Gyllenhaal’s win also helped Elon University place seventh (tie) in the Intercollegiate Broadcast News Competition, the school’s highest finish ever. Elon tied with the University of Montana and finished ahead of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Hofstra University. Other schools in the top 10 are Syracuse University, the top finisher, Arizona State University, University of North Carolina, University of Southern California, University of Florida and The Pennsylvania State University.
