Mike Kingston, an associate professor of biology, was interviewed by the La Jolla Village News in San Diego, Calif., on the phenomenon of green beaches in southern California.
During the winter and spring, large green patches form on the beaches at low tide as billions of microscopic algae living within the beach sand swim to the surface to photosynthesize while the tide is out. Kingston has studied these sand communities in southern California, Oregon, and North Carolina.
