David Noer, the Frank S. Holt Jr. Professor of Business Leadership in the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business, had his monthly column published March 21, 2009, by the News & Record in Greensboro, N.C.
“The new workplace commandments” listed 10 old “commandments” that were in place and re-framed them based on a new reality of how businesses and employees interact.
An example would be the second commandment. Old: “Thou shalt trust that the organization will take care of you.” Refraimed: “Thou shalt take care of thyself.”
“We are not only experiencing a global economic meltdown, but the dawn of a new reality in the way employees relate to organizations,” Noer writes. “Like it or not – and most of us find a lot not to like – we are embarking upon a new psychological employment contract where people are seen as costs to be reduced and not long-term assets to be nurtured and developed over a career.”
