Editors from The Pendulum, Elon's student newspaper, were honored with Mark of Excellence awards for their work during the Society of Professional Journalists Region 2 conference in Arlington, Va., March 28.
Six Pendulum students and adviser Colin Donohue attended the conference to see where they placed in the competition. Editors had already been informed that they had placed in the top three in their respective categories in Region 2, which comprises North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Delaware, but they didn’t know their exact placement. Students who placed first in the Region 2 competition move on to the national competition, and those awards will be given in August in Indianapolis at the overall SPJ conference.
- Sophomore Pam Richter, the sports editor at The Pendulum, placed first in the online commentary category for a series of columns she wrote for the Greensboro News & Record. She will move on to the national competition.
- Junior Andie Diemer, the editor of The Pendulum, placed second in the general news reporting category for her story “Vandals strike work of Elon scholar-in-residence.”
- Junior Angie Lovelace, a photographer for The Pendulum, placed second in the feature photography category for her photographs of the Michael Foreman ceremony.
- Junior Hannah Williams, the special projects editor at The Pendulum, placed first in the in-depth reporting category for her story “You Want It? You Got It!” about ARAMARK. She will move on to the national competition.
- The Pendulum newspaper placed first in the best all-around non-daily newspaper category. The paper will move on to the national competition.
