Death of student Milena Alvarez

The university community is deeply saddened by the death of student Milena Alvarez, who passed away April 1 after a courageous battle with cancer. Milena was a freshman from Winston-Salem, N.C. She was recently initiated as a sister in Alpha Chi Omega and was also a member of Campus Outreach.

The loss of a classmate and friend is disconcerting. Those who knew Milena may wish to speak with their minister or speak with a counselor. If anyone needs assistance, please call Campus Security at 278-5555 and ask to speak with the Counselor on Call. Also, do not hesitate to contact the Chaplain’s Office at 278-7729, Counseling Services at 278-7280 or the Office of Student Development at 278-7200 tomorrow.

For those of you who might want to attend and drive yourself, travel time to Winston-Salem is approximately 75 minutes. The University will also offer transportation to the funeral on Saturday for those who might need transportation. Father Gerry Waterman, Catholic Campus Priest, will drive a van and accompany the group. If you would like to ride the van, please call the Office of Student Development at (336) 278-7200 before 4:00 pm on Friday. The van will depart from Boney Fountain (in front of Moseley Center) at 9:30 am on Saturday and will return Saturday afternoon.

Counseling Services (278-7280), the staff of the Truitt Center (278-7729) for Religious and Spiritual Life and Office of Student Development (278-7200) are resources for all members of the community who need additional support during this difficult time.
