The Martha and Spencer Love School of Business Dean’s Awards for Faculty

Excellence in Teaching
Buck McGregor, associate professor of accounting

The Martha and Spencer Love School of Business Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching recognizes a faculty member who exemplifies the Elon University teacher-scholar model. The recipient of the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching is outstanding in the classroom, engages students in the learning process, maintains academic rigor, and provides evidence of commitment to the intellectual development of students through mentoring and related activities.

Comments by Mary Gowan, dean of the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business:

“The recipient’s department chair describes him as a demanding and highly effective classroom teacher who teaches one of the most difficult classes for students in his field. He insists on rigor in the classroom and receives high praise from his students for his dedication and willingness to work with them outside of the classroom. He has consistently received high marks as an instructor in the MBA program. His chair goes on to say that ‘In many ways, he embodies the teacher/scholar model.’

“This professor has mentored honors students, working with them to successfully complete their theses and in many other ways he has been a role model for our students. He was described in recent student evaluations as follows from undergraduate students: ‘… a great professor with a subtle sense of humor. He is very interested in the progress of his students and is willing to help after class. He’s intelligent and very knowledgeable about his subject matter.’ And from an MBA student: ‘He is very knowledgeable about the subject and enjoys teaching. He makes what could be dry material interesting and relevant to those outside of the profession.’”

Excellence in Scholarship
Steve DeLoach, professor of economics

The Martha and Spencer Love School of Business Dean’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship recognizes one or more faculty members each year whose scholarly work has a significant intellectual impact in keeping with the Elon scholar-mentor model. Selection factors for this award include publication or presentation of peer-reviewed research in quality outlets and evidence that the faculty member engages in scholarship related activities. These activities might include supporting the scholarly endeavors of colleagues, advancing the school’s reputation, and mentoring students in undergraduate research.

Comments by Mary Gowan:

“This professor has received notoriety for his own research and often serves as a subject matter expert on local news stations. He frequently relates his research to his students in class and whets their appetite to become involved in scholarship activities. He has mentored almost 40 undergraduate research projects with many resulting in presentations at national and regional conferences and/or publication in peer-reviewed undergraduate journals and in peer-reviewed academic journals.

“This professor has been a force in the success of an undergraduate research journal and student presentations at academic conferences. He has been instrumental in encouraging the colleagues in his department to stretch in their own research activities and to hire colleagues to continue to strengthen the scholarship activities of the department and school.”

Exemplary Service – External
Rob Springer, Director of Institutional Research for Elon University

The Martha and Spencer Love School of Business Dean’s Award for Exemplary Service – External recognizes a member of the larger Elon University community who has contributed in meaningful ways to the ongoing welfare and betterment of the LSB. This contribution can take the form of assisting LSB with a specific program or project or providing ongoing support for LSB activities.

Comments by Mary Gowan:

“The 2009 recipient has been described as patient, professional, expert, and responsive. He provides ongoing assistance to the LSB, often on short notice. His work plays a key role in helping us build the reputation of the programs in the LSB. One professor in the LSB who has regularly worked with this person summed up the relationship: ‘Thanks for his 12,458 reminders on surveys that need to be completed this very week. His patience with us in completing those surveys when we have no idea about the questions to be completed. And for a sense of humor that is surprisingly quirky for a statistician. And for utter unflappability in the face of countless things that need to be done right now.’

“Another colleagues who works with him closely in the LSB noted: ‘He knows (and lives) data. Across countless requests (for Business Week, US News and World Report, AACSB and others) he can provide the data: Number of faculty (which semester?), number of students (as of what date?), percent from underrepresented populations, percent in 100- or 200- or 300- or 400-level classes, percent in graduate school six years after graduation — He patiently and helpfully provides the data, always on time, often with his boyish grin. If he has a question, he asks it; he wants to give you the highest quality information.’ To sum it up, this year’s recipient is patient, professional, expert, and responsive. Those are great qualities in a data guru.”

Exemplary Service – Faculty
Susan Manring, associate professor of management

The Martha and Spencer Love School of Business Dean’s Award for Exemplary Service–Faculty recognizes one or more faculty members each year who has contributed in meaningful ways to the ongoing welfare and betterment of the college, university and profession. This award follows from the Elon servant-leadership model. Selection is based on service in the preceding year plus overall willingness to volunteer one’s time when needed and to carry new ideas to reality

Comments by Mary Gowan:

“I’m sure I shall inadvertently omit one or two, but allow me to try to describe a few of her contributions over the past year. She has mentored our Love Award recipients for the past few years, coaching them to award-winning successful completion of their projects. She has served as the advisor for Beta Gamma Sigma, ensuring that we have more active participation of students throughout the year. She has taken on a leadership role for our partnership in the Principles of Responsible Management Education, a not inconsequential task that has the potential to bring great visibility to the LSB.

“But her biggest contribution may have been the leadership role she took on in first the Department of Business Administration and later Department of Management, serving very capably—and calmly—as interim department chair and chairing the search for the Holt Professorship and Department Chair. As department chair, she facilitated a successful transition to two new departments and skillfully and tactfully guided the faculty through some murky water to help the management department begin to define its future direction.”

Exemplary Service – Staff
Brenda Crutchfield, assistant in the Love School of Business Dean’s Office

The Martha and Spencer Love School of Business Dean’s Award for Exemplary Service – Staff recognizes a staff member who has contributed in meaningful ways to the ongoing welfare and betterment of the LSB. This contribution includes performing duties above and beyond the staff member’s regular functions to support and advance the Love School of Business.

Comments by Mary Gowan:

“The 2009 recipient has been described as the ‘glue’ that holds things together for us and that could not have been more the case this academic year during some very difficult and challenging times when we were short staffed for various reasons. Those times must have felt to her as if she was the sole remaining support staff member in the building – but if it did, she never let it show!

“This person consistently performs her job in a positive manner. She truly embodies what it means to have a servant heart. Students have come to her with problems and in tears, and left with a smile on their faces. And that happens with faculty as well! So many times during this year I’ve had individuals who have needed to contact me follow up with affirming comments about the graciousness and care with which this staff member has handled their requests. I think one of her co-workers provided the best description of this year’s Dean’s Award for Exemplary Service—Staff by saying simply: she’s awesome!”

Crutchfield received the lone standing ovation of the evening as she walked from her seat to receive the award.
