Bonnie Baxter ’88 featured on NOVA Science Now program

Bonnie Baxter ’88 received the 2008 Distinguished Alumna of the Year award

Alumna Bonnie Baxter, professor of biology at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, is director of the Great Salt Lake Institute. She was featured in a NOVA Science Now segment that aired July 28th concerning what ancient salt deposits can tell us about life 250 million years ago.

Baxter has earned international attention for her research of DNA cell repair and her work at Great Salt Lake, where she discovered multiple species of microorganisms called “halophiles.” Her discovery shattered the belief that life could not exist in such a high-saline environment.

Baxter received the Elon Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumna of the Year award in 2008.
