Elon Law professor and senior scholar Jeffrey Kinsler has been elected to The American Law Institute (ALI), the leading independent organization in the United States producing scholarly work to clarify, modernize, and otherwise improve the law.
ALI is made up of 4,000 lawyers, judges, and law professors of the highest qualifications. Election to the ALI is limited to one third of one percent of lawyers in the country and is considered by many to be the most prestigious legal organization in America.
The Institute drafts, revises, and publishes Restatements of the Law, model statutes, and principles of law that are influential in the nation’s courts and legislatures, as well as in legal scholarship and education.
Prior to joining the Elon law faculty in 2007, Kinsler was dean of Appalachian School of Law. A member of the Virginia, Tennessee, Illinois and Wisconsin bars, he has co-authored ten books and has published numerous law review articles, with a research emphasis on civil discovery, evidence, and tax law. Kinsler’s article, “The Unmerry Widow: Spousal Disinheritance and Life Insurance in North Carolina,” is scheduled for publication in the North Carolina Law Review this year.
Kinsler has taught at the schools of law at Valparaiso University, the University of Denver, the University of Tennessee and Marquette University. He has also served as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Queensland and has taught at the University of Sydney and Griffith University, all in Australia.
Kinsler was a partner with Katten, Muchin & Zavis in Chicago, where he also practiced with Mayer, Brown & Platt. He obtained his undergraduate degree with honors from Ball State University, graduated first in his class at Valparaiso University School of Law and obtained a master of laws degree from Yale Law School.
