On October 14, Elon law students and other young professionals participated in the first forum of a Local Government Educational Series about the roles and responsibilities of Greensboro’s city government, sponsored by Elon Law and synerG, the young professionals initiative of Action Greensboro.
The forum, titled “Local Government 101: How the City Works For You,” addressed budgeting, the Council-Manager form of government and land use.
Panelists included former Greensboro Mayor Carolyn Allen, Interim Greensboro City Manager Bob Morgan, and Elon Law professor Howard Katz.
Craig Turner, a member of the Class of 2010, attended the discussion. “It was a wonderful opportunity to interact with local government officials and experts on city government to better understand and appreciate the workings of local government,” said Turner.
The turnout among law students and young professionals exceeded the expectations of organizers.
Katz indicated that high levels of participation in events like the local government forum are a good sign for the future of the City of Greensboro. “It is so important that younger people get involved in local politics,” Katz said.
The next luncheon will be dedicated to discussing economic development issues. It will be hosted at the law school on October 21 from 12 to 1:30 p.m. Tickets, $10 each, may be purchased at www.synerG.org.
The Local Government Educational Series will culminate with a City Council candidates’ forum hosted on October 28 at the Greensboro Historical Museum from 6 to 8 p.m. Reservations for this free event may be made at www.synerG.org.

The local government series is presented by synerG’s Leadership Initiative, which works to connect Greensboro-area young professionals with volunteer leadership opportunities within city, county and nonprofit organizations.
