Multicultural Center to premiere diversity education tool ‘DEEP Impact’

Elon University's Multicultural Center will debut a new diversity education program on October 27 in a community event at Carousel Cinemas, where a student-produced film will be screened to foster conversations about topics such as race and sexual orientation while addressing biases and stereotypes.

The 7 p.m. event at the theater in Alamance Crossing is free and open to the public.

“DEEP Impact” is a multimedia project that includes a film by the same name, a user’s manual and various assessment tools that expose audiences to subtle and overt acts of intolerance.

“I hope that ‘DEEP Impact’ will excite the audience on issues shown in the film involving race, class, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability, and national origin,” said Leon Williams, director of the Multicultural Center.

Elon’s student film society, Cinelon, created the film featuring actors from Elon’s Department of Performing Arts. The premiere will include a public dialogue immediately following the film.

“DEEP Impact” is funded by a grant from the Guilford Green Foundation. The new program is available for use by all student organizations, classes and departments at the university.

“Bringing about awareness and providing tools for people to discuss diversity is the No. 1 goal of the program,” said Melissa Jordan, assistant director of the Multicultural Center.

The Multicultural Center at Elon University offers the community diversity education and awareness programs, leadership opportunities, resources for faculty and students, and support and advising services to help multicultural students make successful academic and social adjustments to university life.
