Elon School of Communications student Eugene Daniel told an audience of Internet experts from around the world that there needs to be more education on how the Internet operates and is governed. Daniel presented his views on the role youth play in Internet governance Nov. 16 at the Internet Governance Forum in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.
Daniel sat on the panel with 10 other speakers representing organizations from around the world.
“I want to address my generation’s lack of knowledge of the inner workings and behind-the-screen makeup of the Internet,” Daniel said. “Today’s youth maintain a misguided understanding of online privacy, which does not in its entirety exist. But we don’t care. Why? Because we don’t know.”
Daniel is at the Internet Governance Forum along with fellow communications students Andie Diemer, Shelley Russell and Drew Smith. The team of Elon journalists at IGF is led by Janna Quitney Anderson, associate professor of communications and director of Elon’s Imagining the Internet Center.
