A Leisure and Sport Management class led by associate professor Hal Walker planned and hosted two events over the fall semester in which students raised $2,800 for philanthropic causes.
Students in LSM 227 worked on the Nov. 15 Glowball Golf Tournament at Indian Valley. Seventy-six golfers participated in this event, playing nine holes during the day and nine holes at night with the aid of flashlights and glow sticks illuminating the cart paths, fairways, greens and flagsticks.
The event supported Nicholas Simon, brother of current Elon student Sam Simon, and his fight against brain cancer.
Sam Simon attended the event and shared sentiments extended by his brother, as golfers made the turn after nine holes to enjoy wings provided by The Fat Frogg restaurant and bar in Elon.

Other class members worked on the Kopper Top Tennis Classic in support of Kopper Top Life Learning Center in Liberty, N.C., held at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on Nov. 21. Seventy participants took part in a doubles bracket, and two singles brackets, one with advanced players and another with intermediate players.
A large number of volunteers attended the event from Kopper Top with Deborah Meridith, the center’s founder and executive director, along with several therapy animals from the farm.
