Students and faculty attend Alternative Fake Break trip to Mississippi

More than four years after the storm, a group of 16 students and faculty participated in Elon’s 22nd trip to Bay St. Louis, Miss., this winter for Hurricane Katrina relief work during Fake Break.

Volunteers stayed at Project Hope and Compassion in Lizana, Miss., and helped with several service projects around the Gulf Coast. Projects included painting, building and landscaping for two houses in the area, as well as cleanup of an abandoned volunteer camp in Pass Christian, Miss.

The group also had the opportunity to experience some of the local culture and spent an afternoon in New Orleans, seeing the sights and attending a Mardi Gras parade.

Participants included Aisha Mitchell, Katy Milizio, Alex Dempsey, Charley Costa, Rachel Stanley, Lauren Clapp, Nick Dioguardi, Walt Yates, Jack Rodenfels, Nate Guerette, Jenna Strucko, Kory Johnson, and faculty advisors Brian O’Shea and MarQuita Barker. The trip was led by Jackie Brockmyre and Becca Bender.

The trip ran from Jan. 27 through Feb. 1.
