New pedestrian safety and lighting improvements

Elon's physical plant workers will be installing enhanced lighting on campus and working with Town of Elon officials to reconfigure two crosswalks on Williamson Avenue.

Current crosswalks on Williamson Avenue

Effective immediately, temporary lighting will be installed to increase illumination of the crosswalks on Williamson Avenue near the Pendulum offices, on Haggard Avenue near Powell Building and on Haggard Avenue at the intersection with O’Kelly Avenue.

Current plans are to install permanent supplemental lighting at those locations within the next 3-4 weeks, including 16-foot light poles to fully illuminate all three main crosswalks on Haggard Avenue.

Plans also call for additional lighting to be mounted on several campus buildings next week, increasing general light levels on sidewalks near Powell, Smith, Carolina, Sloan, Mooney, and McEwen Communications Building. Additional lighting will illuminate crosswalks on Haggard Avenue near Alumni Gym.

In addition, work will begin soon on reconfiguring the crosswalks on Williamson Avenue just West of McEwen Communications Building and McEwen Dining Hall. Plans call for six parking spaces to be removed to create two separate crosswalks, allowing pedestrians to cross Williamson at 90 degree angles to either side of West College Avenue.

This will eliminate the diagonal crosswalks currently at that location.
