School of Communications associate professor and associate department chair Frances Ward-Johnson recently chaired a panel discussion at the 3rd International Conference on Sport, Race and Ethnicity held at the University of West Indies, Cave Hill campus, in Barbados.
The conference, a comprehensive examination of how sport helps to shape national and social identities, was held July 15-18.
Ward-Johnson chaired a panel titled “Race, Sport and Power,” which featured papers exploring topics such as football, race and nationalism in Latin America; African Americans, Latinos and Major League Baseball; and, the effect of negative publicity on sport sponsorship relations in Australia.
Paper presenters and conference keynote speakers were from Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Canada, South Africa, the United States, the United Kingdom and the Caribbean, among other countries.
Ward-Johnson co-teaches, with associate professor Hal Walker, a Winter Term study abroad course titled “Barbados: Culture, Sport and Media,” and was also visiting the university to complete course research and network with university professors and local leaders.
