LabCorp, the largest private employer in Alamance County and a pioneer in genomic testing and the commercialization of new diagnostic technologies, held a reception on Aug. 19 to recognize high school juniors, seniors and recent graduates enrolled in the Elon Academy who completed a summer internship with the company.
The Burlington-based company is is one of the world’s largest clinical laboratories and a longtime supporter of the Elon Academy. Its administrators designed the paid internship program after similar efforts by several other companies.
Thirteen students were placed in various LabCorp departments, including legal, public affairs, human resources, billing and information technology. Corporate and campus leaders hope that the students, by taking part in the internship program, learned social and professional skills that will assist them in pursuing their career goals.
Elon Academy staff and LabCorp employees joined the students at a reception at LabCorp. Assistant Director Darris Means and scholar Caitlyn Short made remarks about their appreciation for the LabCorp-Elon Academy partnership.
The Elon Academy is a college-access and success program for academically-talented, Alamance County students who would be the first in their families to attend college or who demonstrate a financial need. The students are selected for the Academy during their freshman year in high school and spend the next three years engaging in academic and enrichment activities on Elon’s campus and in the community.
Students and families continue to receive support through their college education.
