Associate professors of physical therapy Bill Andrews and Susan Chinworth have published an article in the Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy along with third-year DPT students Michael Bourassa, Miranda Garvin, Dacia Benton, and Scott Tanner.
In the article, titled “Update on Distance and Velocity Requirements for Community Ambulation,” the authors conclude that distance requirements for full community ambulation may need to be increased to 600 meters or more and that the gait speed requirements at crosswalks are set to accommodate the capabilities of older pedestrians.
