Elon University professors, administrators and alumni made regional and national news in recent weeks through their research and activities, both on and off campus. Notable this September was coverage of the Elon University Poll. The following list should not be considered exhaustive and does not include all athletics news.
9/4: (Greensboro, N.C.) News & Record: “Roanoke hopes to use Elon law school as model” reports on the mayor of Roanoke, Va., visiting the Triad to learn how the Elon University School of Law developed in downtown Greensboro. (Not currently posted online)
9/7: (Burlington, N.C.) Times-News: “Cap on Alcohol?” is a summary of efforts Elon has made in recent years to curb alcohol abuse by students, and how other colleges and universities are now taking similar approaches.
9/8: (Burlington, N.C.) Times-News: “Political analyst visits Elon, predicts big GOP gains” was a story on observations made by Charlie Cook, editor and publisher of The Cook Political Report, who spoke with media on Sept. 7 at a workshop hosted by the Elon University Poll.
9/8: Arabia Inform: “How Do Americans Learn About the Middle East?” is a blog entry by Jan Diggs, a writer for Arabia Inform, which serves as a source of news for Arabic and English speakers in the Middle East. In her entry, Diggs quotes associate professor Michael Skube on students’ natural curiosity in his “Media & the Middle East” course at the university.
9/10: Business Journal of the Greater Triad: “Elon ‘excels’ at sustainability” reports on a sustainability internship at the university currently held by Ben Stanley. The article included quotes from Elaine Durr, Elon’s sustainability coordinator. (Full article available to subscribers)
9/12: (Greensboro, N.C.) News & Record: “Time to Evaluate What a Civil Society Embodies” is the monthly business leadership column by professor emeritus David Noer. In it, Noer argues that American society needs to “stop the erosion” of its behavioral standards. (Column not posed to the News & Record website; link goes to Noer’s personal site)
September/October: Change – The Magazine of Higher Learning: “Turnover: Selecting the Next Generation’s Presidents” mentions Elon’s transformation from a college to a university “based on a strategy for change and the careful development of the means for effecting that change.”
9/17: (Wilmington, N.C.) Star-News: “No end in sight for woman’s legal fight” cites Michael Rich, an associate professor of law, on the rights for a speedy trial after a woman who has been awaiting trial for five years on gambling and slot machine possession charges.
9/19: (Greensboro, N.C.) News & Record: “N.C. voters don’t know much about judicial elections” quotes law professor Scott Gaylord on how voters in North Carolina can make informed decisions in judicial elections.
9/21: WXII 12 News: “Political Climate Changing” interviews Elon University Poll director Hunter Bacot on the political movement against lawmakers as the economy continues to dim many voters’ spirits.
9/22: Winston-Salem Journal: “’Remarkable’ man celebrates at center” showcases Eddie Holder, a first-year student at Elon University School of Law who is recovering from a mosquito-borne illness that left him paralyzed.
9/23: WFMY News 2: “President’s Prescription for Health Care Reform Taking Effect” is a report on provisions of the health care reform legislation that are now underway. News 2 interviewed Elon University Poll director Hunter Bacot on the politics of the legislation.
