The Premier Sport & Event Society, the Department of Sport & Event Management's student major’s association, recently earned more than $4,100 at the SAS – PGA Champion’s Tour golf tournament.
The SAS tournament was held at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary, N.C., from Sept. 21-26, 2010. PSES coordinated 138 volunteers to manage 5 concession locations at various points on the golf course. The group also solicited the assistance of students from Winston-Salem State University and their sport management major’s club.
Also assisting in this effort were several Elon alums (including the mother of an Elon alum – Martha Conner – mother of LSM alum Leslie Pritchett); Elon faculty & staff; and children of Elon faculty and staff. Amanda Sturgill from the School of Communications brought her daughter Claire to support the effort, as well as David Worden from the Physical Plant, who brought his wife Diane, and daughters Danja & Doria, to help.
This is the 6th year the club has managed concessions at this PGA tour event, with this year’s total – $4,132 – being the highest amount raised. Great weather and a stellar cast of popular players brought great crowds to this year’s tournament. This fundraising event supports the Department of Sport & Event Management’s endowed scholarship effort, raising funds to support a student major each year with an outstanding academic & service record and demonstrated financial need.
The departmental endowed scholarship was initiated in 2005 and has risen to almost $80,000 with more than half of the total amount raised, the result of funds generated by the Premier Sport & Event Society.
