From the Wilkes Journal-Patriot (11/5/10): Wilkes County commissioners on Monday agreed to delay action on a proposed code of ethics until two new members of the board take office on Dec. 6.
Legislation approved by the N.C. General Assembly in 2009 requires that municipal and county governments and school boards adopt a code of ethics policy by Jan. 1. The legislation also requires that members of these elected bodies receive ethics training.
The town council in Wilkesboro already adopted a code of ethics policy, based on a model document prepared by the University of North Carolina School of Government. The town boards of North Wilkesboro and Ronda, like the county board, haven’t yet taken action.
Dr. Steve Laws, Wilkes school superintendent, said the Wilkes Board of Education has three policies in place that meet requirements of the state law requiring a code of ethics and that all school board members will have completed ethics training by Dec. 9. He said the training is offered by the N.C. School Boards Association, both in person and in a webinar.
