Times-News highlights Elon journalism engagement

A recent column in The Burlington Times-News underscored the civic engagement that students in an Elon journalism course perform each year.

Students in associate professor Glenn Scott’s “Reporting for the Public Good” course report stories for a special section of the newspaper devoted to exploring community trends and issues. Times-News Editor Madison Taylor published a column on Nov. 22 describing his visit to Scott’s class to arrange for a series of student-produced stories.

In “Helping Elon as They Help Us,” Taylor described the mutually beneficial relationship between the paper and journalism students in Elon’s School of Communications. The paper provides opportunities; the students gain learning experiences while supplying useful coverage in the community.

He noted that associate professor Janna Anderson helped initiate the program.

“At different parts of the year Elon students make their way to our office as interns or to produce projects of one kind or another for their classes,” Taylor writes. “We’re happy to have them in any capacity. They seem to like it, too.”
