The November/December edition of North Carolina Lawyer, a publication of the North Carolina Bar Association, features Leary Davis, founding dean emeritus at Elon Law, for his recent work as acting executive director for Karamah: Muslim Women Lawyers for Human Rights.
Karamah’s website describes the organization as, “a charitable, educational organization that focuses on the domestic and global issues of human rights for Muslim women … founded upon the ideal that education, dialogue, and action can counter the dangerous and destructive effects of ignorance, silence, and prejudice.”
In the North Carolina Lawyer article, Davis notes that the organization draws on a long and rich legal history in Islamic society.
“What Karamah does is empower Muslim women within the context of their culture, protecting their rights with an Islamic jurisprudence that goes back to Islam’s founding, when it was far ahead of the rest of the world with respect to women’s rights. Few people realize, for instance, that the Prophet Muhammad’s first wife was an active businesswoman,” Davis says.
The North Carolina Lawyer article notes that Davis served for four months as a visiting senior legal fellow at the Center for Creative Leadership’s Colorado Springs office prior to his service with Karamah.
